We are always pleased to hear from good amateur string players. As a rough guide, applicants should be ABRSM Grade VIII standard or thereabouts. Relevant experience is also fine, nobody will be asking to see your certificate!
Instead of formal auditions we prefer an on-the-job approach so don’t be surprised if you are asked to sit at the front during your first rehearsal. To find out more, contact Richard on or by telephone/post as on the About us page.
We will post any vacancies in the wind and brass on this page. If you would like to find out more or hear about when we do have a vacancy, contact Richard on or by telephone/post as on the About us page.
Where and When
We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7.35pm, setting up from 7.20, at Ealing Green Church, Ealing Green, W5 5QT. Check the Members page for the room, usually this is the main church but very occasionally might change. On concert days we rehearse in the afternoon. Most of our concerts are in Ealing.
The nearest tube stations are Ealing Broadway (Central, District) and South Ealing (Piccadilly). The number 65 bus stops quite close to the Church and there are many buses along Uxbridge Road, just a short walk away. There is parking available on most streets nearby starting from 7.30pm; there are some restricted sections so check signs before parking.
We are occasionally invited to play at other venues across and outside the country, with past trips including Clifton Cathedral, Bristol, and the Malcolm Arnold Festival in Northampton, and tours to Ischia in Italy, Haarlem in the Netherlands, Lucca in Tuscany and the Cesis Arts Festival in Latvia. (We can’t guarantee a tour or trip every year, but we do try to arrange a little something.) We sometimes play with the Lord Williams’s Festival Chorus, in Thame, Oxfordshire. Additionally, the orchestra gives an annual chamber music concert for the Friends of St Mary’s Perivale.
In addition to the concert schedule, we try to have some sort of awayday in the summer and a party at Christmas. A large contingent find their way to the King’s Arms in The Grove after rehearsals, and there is the occasional curry night!
Extra concerts, chamber music opportunities and other events also crop up from time to time.
Our annual subscription is currently £160, or you can pay per concert. Thanks to the generosity of our Friends, including members of the orchestra who pay over the odds, we are able to be flexible, so don’t stay away if the money is hard to find.
We can offer free places for music students, space permitting. There is usually room in the strings; wind and brass please enquire.
We are listed on Geoff Roussel’s excellent UK Amateur Orchestras website. Click the button below or visit amateurorchestras.org.uk.
