Strings

We are always pleased to hear from string players of ABRSM Grade VIII standard (relevant equivalent experience is fine). We do many concerts each year, some on very short rehearsal cycles or maybe even on the day only, so a willingness to learn and adapt quickly, with good sightreading skills, would be a big help.

We prefer an on-the-job approach; instead of auditions, you will be asked to sit with the section principal for part of a rehearsal as part of the evaluation process.

Members are expected to attend the majority (>75%) of rehearsals for a given concert.

To find out more, contact Richard on  or by telephone/post as on the About us page.

Other vacancies

There are currently no vacancies in the wind and brass.

We usually hire in a harpist, percussion, keyboards and other specialist instruments on-the-day as required, but if you are a student or amateur looking for playing experience at the weekly rehearsals, we would be happy to hear from you.

If you would like to find out more, or hear about when we do have a vacancy, contact Richard on  or by telephone/post as on the About us page.

Where and When

We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7.35pm, setting up from 7.20, at Ealing Green Church, Ealing Green, W5 5QT (map). On concert days we rehearse in the afternoon.

The nearest tube stations to the rehearsal venue are Ealing Broadway (Central, District, main line) and South Ealing (Piccadilly); the 65 stops close by and there are many buses along Uxbridge Road, just a short walk away.

Parking is available on most streets from 7.30pm but check signs as there are some restricted sections. (There is no parking at the church itself; space permitting you can pull in temporarily to drop off bulky instruments then park elsewhere.)

Social scene

A large contingent seems to find their way to the King’s Arms in The Grove after rehearsals, we have a Christmas Party and usually a Summer social, and there is the occasional curry night.

We have a ‘Jaunt’ away from home most years, usually around a bank holiday weekend, to play informally and have fun with an overnight camping or B&B stay.

Extra concerts, chamber music opportunities and other events also crop up from time to time.

Membership fee/subscription

Our annual subscription is currently £160, or you can pay per concert. Thanks to the generosity of our Friends, including members of the orchestra who pay over the odds, we are able to be flexible, so don’t stay away if the money is hard to find.

We can offer free places for music students, space permitting. There is usually room in the strings; wind and brass please enquire.
